Clean Boats Clean Waters

Coming to a Boat Launch near you in 2024 and 2025

The RTLIA is required to conduct training and boat inspections during the 2024-2025 boating seasons.  These inspections are part of an ongoing effort to combat the spread of invasive aquatic species.  We look forward to everyone’s cooperation and assistance as we conduct these tasks.

With the growing concern over the spread of aquatic invasive species to Wisconsin’s inland lakes, many lake association members and other concerned citizens are looking for ways to get involved.  The Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program is an opportunity to take a front line defense against the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Through the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, inspectors are trained to organize and conduct a boater education program in their community. Adults and youth teams educate boaters on how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride into water bodies. Inspectors perform boat and trailer checks for invasive species, distribute informational brochures and collect and report any new water body infestations.  Information courtesy of UW Extension- Stevens Point

There are standard practices we all can take to minimize the spread of invasive species and in Wisconsin, It’s the Law.

  • Inspect and remove plants, animals and mud from boats, boat trailers and any other equipment used on the water
  • Drain all water from live well, bilge and motor
  • Throw unused bait in the trash, not in the water-  do not use the same bait in multiple lakes
  • Wash boats and equipment
